Free to talk?

She hesitated for a moment, unsure if she was ready to speak with him. Then she realized that although she’d been hurting because of him, she was actually doing well. Of course, Tommy had a lot to do with that.

For a bit, she responded and went to her computer to Skype.

Moments later, Rory’s beautiful face filled her screen. Her heart stuttered. She missed him. In the next breath, though, she realized her longing for him had little to do with attraction. He was her friend. Her closest friend. And now she hurt because he’d kept such an important part of himself from her.

She shoved those feelings aside because he was obviously reaching out for a reason.

“Deirdre, love. I knew you had lied about your mobile.”

She smiled. “I can’t talk to my family yet. How are you?”

“Good, I think. The better question is how are you?”

“Better than I was a week ago. Your news hit me hard, but I’m trying to understand.” She waited, unsure of what questions to ask or what to say.

“I’m phoning to let you know I told your family we broke up.”

Her eyes popped wide because her immediate thought was that they would think she’d done something.

Rory’s hand came up. “I told them it was me who broke it off. They were so upset that that was as far as I got in my confession.”

He hadn’t told them about being gay? She absolutely had to avoid them now. She licked her lips. “Have they gotten better since telling them?”

He shook his head. “Let’s just say you might want to really break your mobile.”

He suddenly looked so sad her heart broke all over. “What happened?”

“Last night, I finally sat with Brendan. I thought he’d be the best to tell first. He punched me, which I guess I had coming.”

“Oh no.” Deirdre covered her mouth.

“He hit me in your defense. I can’t blame him. Once I got the remainder out—told him about Michael—I was met with stunned silence. Then nothing.”

So he was all alone. She wanted to throw her arms around him.

“This morning, your dad called and told me to not come to the pub.”

This was worse than she’d envisioned. This reaction was why Rory had kept himself so private.

“Are you all right?”

He swallowed hard, his throat visibly moving before he answered with a smile. “I’m with Michael.”

The look in his eyes and the smile on his face made her happy. “Can I meet him?”

Rory smiled. “He’s asleep just now. I kept him up late. Next time I’d love for you to meet him.”

Deirdre glanced at the time. She needed to get going or she’d miss her bus and be late for work. “I’m sure my family will get over it. You’re the best employee they have. It would be stupid to fire you.”

“How are things with you? Is your American all you hoped for?”

Heat crept up her neck thinking about Tommy. “I like him quite a bit.”

Even though Rory was her friend, she wasn’t ready to talk to him about having sex with Tommy.
